Hi! Welcome to the Hangry Chickpea. My name is Eliza, and I can't wait to show you how to make easy breezy beach food with plants.
As a surfer, sailor, swimmer, and adventure lover, I love meals and snacks that are simple and laid-back. You'll find everything from pre-surf smoothie bowls, to hearty dinners, and porch-friendly cocktails perfect for unwinding from a long day on the water (or at the office).
Missing an ingredient? No worries, we'll work with what you have. No shirt, no shoes, no problem, we keep it casual over here.
How it all started
The Hangry Chickpea began in February 2019 as a much-needed creative outlet. I love sharing my recipes, and thinking creatively about new ways to do things in the kitchen. Being in the kitchen is about going with the flow, and working with what you have.
I've been mostly vegan for nearly 6 (?!?!) years now. From meal prep to date nights, cookies and carrot cakes to Thanksgiving dinners, I've seen it all, and love sharing what I've learned over the years cooking for myself and others.
Why plant-based?
A few years ago, I was on a documentary kick, trying to figure out how to optimize my health, body and performance. What I found was shocking - not only does a plant-based diet have major health benefits, but it's also one of the easiest ways we can help our planet. I was hooked.
It's easier than you think, and every plant-based meal is a win for our planet. You might notice your body feels better after eating a meal without animal products, even if it's on the heartier side.
With a little creativity and an open mind, you'll find that plant-based eating is NOT about what you can't have. It's actually the opposite. There's almost always a way to create a vegan spin on a dish, and it doesn't have to involve 34 extra steps & a pantry full of special ingredients.
But enough about my philosophy on plant-based cooking.
Outside the kitchen...
When I'm not in the kitchen whipping up a quick snack or meal, I love surfing, sailboat racing, yoga, running, travel, skiing, playing the piano, and trying out new restaurants. Some would say I have too many hobbies, but I just don't like sitting still.
I'm so happy you're here! Kick off your sandals, and let's get cooking!
